All public aquatic facilities should have emergency procedures and protocols in place. Aqua therapist delivering a aqua therapy service from such facilities should familiarise themselves and become aware of these procedures and policies.

Specific emergency competencies include:
• Ability to access deepest section of the pool to perform a rescue
• Ability to draw person to a safer position in the pool (e.g. rail/shallows)
• Ability to maintain position for set time (e.g. in deep pool)
• Ability to perform CPR
• Ability to remove person from pool via appropriate equipment and transfer
